Overview
Objective: To present a case of acute ischemic stroke in a pregnant patient and to describe a successful treatment by intravenous thrombolysis in pregnancy.
Design: Case report.
Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Neurology, Hospital Trenčín, Faculty of Healthcare, Alexander Dubček University of Trenčín, Slovakia.
Case report: We report a case of a pregnant woman with acute ischemic stroke of unknown etiology at 34. week of pregnancy. We describe diagnostic algorithm and application of treatment regimen, followed by evaluation of differential diagnosis to clarify the etiology of the stroke. The patient gave birth to a healthy baby per vias naturales at 37th week of pregnancy.
Conclusion: This case highlights the rare occurrence of stroke in pregnancy. The intravenous thrombolytic therapy should be considered, although standard treatment guidelines in pregnancy do not exist.
